Board Order System (BOS)—New Release
The Board Order System (BOS) has been updated to include oil sands areas, development entities, and control wells for both coalbed methane (CBM) and shale gas. Additionally BOS has been given a new look to reflect changes in the working environment and advances in geographic information system (GIS) software.
Background
BOS was announced by the EUB in General Bulletin (GB) 2000-23 and in Informational Letter (IL) 2001-2 and came into effect on February 1, 2001. The intent of BOS is to make selected EUB Board Orders readily available to industry and the public through an easy-to-use Web-accessible GIS. Included in the original release of BOS were EUB fields, pools, and gas strike areas.
Additions to BOS
New data have been added to BOS. Field and pool orders and gas strike areas will remain, and the following have been added:
- Development Entities – boundaries of the development entities, as announced in Bulletin 2006-16 and Directive 065,
- Oil Sands Areas (OSAs) – boundaries of the three existing OSAs,
- Control Wells for CBM Pressure and Flow Data – well data with a 3 kilometre (km) buffer, as announced in Bulletin 2006-16 and Directive 065,
- Control Wells for Shale Gas Pressure and Flow Data – well data with a 3 km buffer, as announced in Bulletin 2006-16 and Directive 065 (more will be added as they become available),
- Control Wells for CBM Desorption Testing – well data with a 5 km buffer, as announced in Bulletin 2006-16 and Directive 065, and
- Control Wells for Shale Gas Desorption Testing – well data with a 30 km buffer, as announced in Bulletin 2006-16 and Directive 065 (more will be added as they become available).
New BOS Architecture
In addition to the new data available, BOS has been given a new look. It has been upgraded to a new version of GIS software and has taken advantage of software advances to provide a more modern look and feel. The row of icons across the top of the screen looks similar to the previous BOS, with a number of new icons and features added. Changes have been made to the search facility that should provide more flexibility:
- The “zoom go to” button has been removed and replaced with a search facility.
- A GIS zoom control is available on screen, and the zoom ability has been enhanced.
- Layer control is now an icon, which allows the user to hide the layer controls and provide more area on the screen for the map and data.
- Layer control is no longer stationary and uses a more standard GIS approach.
- The results area, which provides the attribute data for the selected feature, has been revised and provides the user with the information on a single selection; if requested, it can expand into a much larger selection. For example, the data for the first 100 orders requested will appear in the scrollable results area, with any additional orders in the search being available through a grid view search.
- A display mode icon allows the user to change the location of the data display, which can provide the user with the entire width of the screen for map viewing.
- There has been a change to the print facility and the historical orders. These data are now available from the results display.
The new BOS site will be available October 1st, 2007. The new and old BOS sites will run concurrently for two months, after which the old BOS site will be discontinued. Please refer to the EUB Web site www.ercb.ca to link to the new BOS location.
