October 2008 - ERCB Wins 'Regulators Award'

The ERCB was honoured last night by receiving the ‘Regulators Award' during the 2008 Energy TV Pipelines Awards held in Calgary.

Held in conjunction with the International Pipeline Exposition, this prestigious awards ceremony honoured leaders in the pipeline industry. Delegates to the Exposition chose the winners from their peers. They were invited to nominate and vote for the leaders in their sector and then a panel of experts reviewed the voting results and made a final judgment on the winners.

In accepting the award on behalf of our Chairman Dan McFadyen, ERCB Board Member Mike Bruni spoke about the positive relationships the ERCB has built since our inception in January of this year, noting that this was the first award won by the new ERCB.

The entire Energy-TV Pipeline Awards was filmed and highlights will be broadcast on Energy-TV, a half hour newsmagazine format television show that is broadcast on Global TV across Alberta.

April 2, 2007 - EUB History Video Wins Prestigious Award!

This week, the EUB was presented with the Petroleum History Society's 2006 Multimedia Award for the DVD "A Salute to the People of the EUB".

The Petroleum History Society (PHS) is a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving and telling the history of the Canadian petroleum industry. The PHS established an awards program in 1995 to recognize the valuable contributions of people and groups helping to keep Alberta's petroleum history alive. These awards, made on the basis of nominations from Society Members, recognize contributions which encourage the study, communication, preservation, and enjoyment of Canadian petroleum industry history.

“A Salute to the People of the EUB” is a history of the EUB and its predecessors, including the ERCB, the Public Utilities Board, and the Alberta Geological Survey. The DVD was created to share with today's EUB employees, and all Albertans, the Board's long and proud tradition of integrity, fairness, and working in the public interest.

Over the past few months, the EUB has distributed over 7,000 copies of the DVD to individuals and media organizations around the world. In an effort to make the DVD more accessible to even wider audiences, it is now available with Closed Captioning. If you would like a copy, or copies, of the DVD, please contact the Customer Contact Centre at EUB.Inquiries@gov.ab.ca .

EUB enjoys awards-winning streak

Regulator receives honours at provincial, national, and international level

Most employees of Alberta's energy regulator find the work rewarding, but lately it's been awarding too.

Recently the EUB has received three awards for its labours and was nominated for a fourth.

In August, the EUB won the Institute of Public Administration of Canada's (IPAC) Award for Innovative Management , which acknowledges innovative managerial initiatives in Canadian public administration.

IPAC recognized the EUB for its role in developing Synergy Alberta, a concept arising out of the need for a centralized resource for synergy groups in the province. The EUB was competing against 71 entries from municipal and provincial government agencies and departments from across Canada.

"Business can no longer be conducted in the same old way, whether it is the business of developing resources, the business of regulating, or simply the business of living," said EUB Chairman Neil McCrank. "Winning this award reflects the EUB's commitment to finding unique solutions to the challenges we face everyday as we work to serve the public interest."

Gary Redmond, executive director of Synergy Alberta, credits EUB innovation for helping to establish the organization and advancing what he calls the "synergy movement" in the province.

"There's no question that ... if it weren't for the EUB, Synergy Alberta wouldn't be here today to promote the sharing of best practices, allowing the groups to learn from one another, and pursuing input from the community," Redmond said.

But the honours don't stop there.

The ERCB achieved the Work Safe Alberta's Best Safety Performers Award in 2005, 2006, and 2007. The best safety performers' award is given out by Alberta Employment and Immigration through the Partnership in Injury Reduction program. This award is presented to Alberta employers with exceptional performance in workplace health and safety.

And then in September, Bob Heggie, the Executive Manager of the EUB's Utilities Branch, won the Leadership in Education and Development Award , presented by Canadian Association of Members of Public Utility Tribunals (CAMPUT), a nonprofit organization of federal, provincial, and territorial regulatory boards and commissions.

Heggie shared the award with an Ontario Energy Board representative for their work in developing the CAMPUT/Queen's University Utility Regulatory Course.

Finally, the EUB was nominated for the International Pipeline Regulatory Award - conferred upon the regulatory body that has contributed significantly to the development of the pipeline industry  - which is awarded by a panel of peers and experts from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

By being named a finalist for the ASME award, the EUB was recognized for being a problem solver and helping others to realize the importance of safe pipeline operations as part of national and international infrastructures. The nomination recognizes leadership, innovation, and a regulatory approach that advances cooperation among stakeholders, and improves safety and environmental stewardship.
