TransCanada Alberta System Under Federal Regulation

In June of 2008, TransCanada Pipelines Limited filed an application to the National Energy Board ( NEB) requesting that the TransCanada Alberta System (also known as NOVA Gas Transmission Ltd.) be declared under federal jurisdiction.

The NEB held a public hearing in November 2008 to respond to the application and on February 26, 2009, the NEB approved TransCanada’s application. On April 15, 2009, the NEB issued a certificate of public convenience under section 52 of the National Energy Board Act after having been granted approval by Governor in Council (GIC).

Effective April 29, 2009, the TransCanada Alberta System will be under federal regulation. Previously, the Alberta System was regulated by the Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC) in conjunction with the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB). Beginning April, 29, 2009 any issues or emergencies related to the Alberta System should be brought forward to the NEB, rather than the AUC or ERCB, by calling the NEB at 403-807-9473.

Questions about the NEB ’s regulations and processes are always welcome as well.
