Board Member Bios

Dan McFadyen
Dan McFadyen was appointed as the Chairman of the ERCB in February 2008.  Mr. McFadyen is a professional engineer with more than three decades of experience in public service and the energy sector.  He joined Alberta Energy as Deputy Minister in January 2006.  Previous positions held by Mr. McFadyen include: Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs and Public Policy, Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA); Deputy Minister of Energy in Nova Scotia; Chair and Acting President and CEO of the Saskatchewan Research Council; and Assistant Deputy Minister in key energy and mineral-related positions in the Saskatchewan public service.


Brad McManus, Q.C.
Brad McManus was appointed as a Board Member of the ERCB in January 2008 and as Vice-Chairman in July 2009.  Mr. McManus joined the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) as a Board Member in 1995, having served previously as a Board Member of the Public Utilities Board of Alberta (PUB) for five years.  He has been a member of numerous Board panels dealing with utility and energy-related hearings.  Prior to joining the PUB, Mr. McManus practiced corporate and commercial law in Calgary for twelve years.


Jim Dilay, P.Eng. 
Jim Dilay was appointed as a Board Member of the ERCB in January 2008.  Mr. Dilay was previously appointed as a Board Member of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) in 1995.  He began his career at the EUB immediately upon graduation from university in 1971 and has worked in the organization for more than 37 years. Prior to being appointed to the Board, Mr. Dilay worked in a number of departments including gas, pipeline, drilling and production, and field operations, and served as Executive Manager of Operations.  He is currently Alberta’s official representative on the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission, of which Alberta is an international affiliate. 


George Eynon, P.Geol.
George Eynon was appointed as a Board Member of the ERCB in April 2008.  Mr. Eynon has over 25 years of technical and management experience in the upstream exploration and production oil and gas sectors worldwide with a number of companies.  He also has about 15 years of energy and management research and consulting experience with several organizations including the Canadian Energy Research Institute (CERI).  At CERI Mr. Eynon was responsible for portions of the research program, and publications, as well as business development, media relations, and conferences and training courses.


Theresa Watson, P.Eng.
Theresa Watson was appointed as a Board Member of the ERCB in July 2009.  Ms. Watson has extensive local and international experience in long-term liability management, wellbore integrity, regulatory compliance, wellbore construction and the repair of problem wells, including severe gas migration and abandonments.  She began her career in the field with Mobil Oil in 1986, and in 1992 started an independent consulting company, T.L. Watson & Associates Inc.  Ms. Watson received her Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) Degree from McGill University in 1986.


Rob McManus, M.E.Des, B.A.
Rob McManus was appointed as a Board Member of the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) in December 2010. Mr. McManus holds a Masters of Environmental Design Degree (Environmental Science), a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology, and is trained in environmental mediation and negotiation. He brings with him almost 30 years of professional experience, including over two decades of environmental and regulatory management experience. He served as a Commissioner and Chairman of the British Columbia Oil and Gas Commission and has held senior positions with Calpine Canada, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, Shell Canada Limited, and Gulf Canada Resources.


Alex Bolton, P. Geol.
Alex Bolton was appointed as a Board Member of the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) in October 2010. Mr. Bolton is a professional geologist and member of the Association of Professional Engineers, and Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta.  He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Earth Sciences and is currently completing a Masters of Management Sciences in Management of Technology through the University of Waterloo.  Prior to joining the ERCB he was President and CEO of Epicentre Consulting Inc. He also spent four years as Director, Compliance & Enforcement with the Natural Resources Conservation Board, six years with Anderson Exploration dealing with environmental issues and community and regulatory affairs, and nine years as a Senior Environment Advisor and Exploration/Development Geologist with Home Oil.


Terry Engen
Terry Engen was appointed as a Board Member of the Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) in October 2010.  Terry Engen is a fifth generation farmer in Lacombe County and, prior to his appointment, was the Reeve of Lacombe County.  He was an elected municipal official for several years and has served as Director and/or Chairman on numerous commissions, review boards and public hearings, and on several community organizations in senior level positions. Mr. Engen has a diverse background in leadership roles with Lacombe County, the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts & Counties, Hockey Alberta and his local community. He also has extensive experience building collaborative relationships with government agencies and the community.
