SUNCOR ENERGY INC.
STEEPBANK EXTRACTION PLANT PROJECT

Take Notice that Suncor Energy Inc. (Suncor) has made an application to the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) and Alberta Environment (AENV) for approval to construct, operate, and reclaim a primary bitumen extraction facility (Steepbank Extraction Plant) within its existing oil sands operation in the Fort McMurray area.

The proposed Steepbank Extraction Plant will be located on the east side of the Athabasca River near the current Steepbank Mine in Township 92, Range 9, West of the 4th Meridian. The proposed plant will replace the current Base Plant primary extraction facility located on the west side of the Athabasca River. Construction of the proposed Steepbank Extraction Plant project is expected to begin in 2006.

Nature of the Application

In support of the proposal, Suncor has prepared and submitted the following:

  • Application No. 1403323 to the EUB pursuant to Sections 13 of the Oil Sands Conservation Act to amend Approval No. 8535 to construct, operate and reclaim a primary bitumen extraction facility.

  • Application No 47-94 to AENV under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) for construction, operation and reclamation of a primary bitumen extraction facility.

To File a Statement of Concern

Under Section 73 of EPEA any person who is directly affected by the EPEA Application may submit a written statement of concern. Statements of concern under EPEA must be submitted by August 11, 2005. Failure to file a statement of concern may affect the right to file a Notice of Appeal with the Environmental Appeal Board. Please quote EPEA Application No. 47-94 when submitting a statement of concern. If no statements of concern are received, the EPEA Application may be approved without further notice.
