EUB ISSUES REPORT FROM AES CALGARY ULC PRE-HEARING MEETING
Calgary, Alberta (June 26, 2001) The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) issued a report yesterday (Memorandum of Decision) concerning an EUB prehearing meeting held on June 21, 2001 in Calgary, Alberta. The purpose of the meeting was to deal with preliminary matters that would facilitate the later public hearing to consider an application from AES Calgary ULC (AES) for a 525 megawatt natural gas-fired power plant east of the Calgary City limits.
The EUB report notes that participants at the prehearing meeting agreed the following issues should be addressed at the hearing:
- risk to public safety,
- environmental impacts such as emissions and noise,
- land use impacts (i.e. the potential effect on the development of nearby lands for residential or other uses),
- impacts on land values (potential diminishment of land value),
- construction impacts (i.e. traffic, dust, noise),
- impact on provincial transmission system, and
- public consultation.
The Board also recognizes that there may be other issues that may arise during the hearing.
Among other items addressed in the report was the hearing date, which was originally scheduled to commence in Calgary on July 23, 2001. In consideration of the views and evidence presented at the prehearing meeting the Board has set a revised hearing date of August 13, 2001. This was done, among other reasons, to allow time for exchange and review of additional information among participants. The Board believes this revised date is fair to AES and all other participants.
