FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INJECTION GAS WELL BLOWOUT IN RAINBOW OIL FIELD SOUTH EAST OF RAINBOW LAKE

Calgary, Alberta (July 9, 2001) The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) and Husky Energy Inc. have responded to a gas injection well blowout in the Rainbow oil field approximately 12 kilometres south east of the town of Rainbow Lake. The well (10-10-109-8W6) belongs to Husky Energy and is located approximately 50 metres from the Husky Rainbow oil processing plant. The well is being used as a gas injection well for solution gas that would otherwise be flared. There are no injuries.

The EUB was notified of the well blowout at 10:30 a.m. July 9, 2001 and will remain actively involved in this incident until well control is regained. Alberta Environment and all other appropriate agencies were also advised of the incident.

The EUB is establishing an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at its High Level field office, and EUB staff are en route to the site. Husky has evacuated its oil processing plant, and established roadblocks. The well is not on fire.

The EUB as the lead emergency response agency is coordinating any necessary government response to support regaining well control. There are no current estimates available as to when this may occur.
