FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EUB ORDERS COMPTON TO WORK WITH CALGARY HEALTH REGION AND LANDOWNERS

Calgary, Alberta (August 15, 2005) The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) has granted Compton Petroleum an extension to November 1, 2005 to notify the EUB of the company's intent to proceed with its application for the Compton North Okotoks sour gas drilling program.

After careful consideration, the EUB has granted the extension and has emphasized that a central element of Compton's efforts is the establishment of a cooperative relationship with municipalities, the Calgary Health Region, and other government agencies that are necessary to create an effective Emergency Response Plan.

The EUB also noted that Compton Petroleum requested additional time to address related aspects of its Land Use and Resources Agreement with landowners.

The Board recognizes that the ensuing deadline for Compton's submission of the Emergency Response Plan is extended to January 1, 2006. All other dates remain fixed as set out in Decision 2005 060.

In its June 22, 2005 decision related to the Compton applications, the EUB stated it would consider extension requests.

Public safety is the EUB's first priority and the processes set out before Compton to move forward are to be strictly adhered to.

A public hearing was held from January 11, 2005 to March 4, 2005 in Calgary where the EUB considered several applications from Compton Petroleum to drill up to six critical sour gas wells on an existing well site, to secure a reduced drilling spacing, and to reduce its Emergency Planning Zone to 4 kilometres.

In its Decision on June 22, 2005, the EUB specified that Compton advise whether or not they would proceed with its applications given the panel's determinations and conditions associated with the project including the completion of a more comprehensive Emergency Response Plan.

The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's resources and utilities services take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
