EUB CLARIFIES PUBLIC CONSULTATION REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPTON EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN
Calgary, Alberta (November 28, 2005) The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) has notified Compton Petroleum Corporation (Compton) that it must consult with all parties who reside within the 9.7-kilometre Emergency Planning Zone (EPZ) approved in Decision 2005-060, and in accordance with Directive 71: Emergency Preparedness and Response Requirements for the Upstream Petroleum Industry.
The EUB has also clarified the process it will use to review Compton's Emergency Response Plan (ERP), which must be filed no later than January 1, 2006.
Compton must file the ERP with the EUB, the interested parties listed in Decision 2005-060, and any other party within the 9.7-km zone that submits a written request for a copy. The EUB will review the ERP to ensure it is compliant with Board regulations. A final ERP, with any necessary revisions, will be resubmitted to all parties.
The parties must advise the EUB within 15 days of receipt of the final ERP if they support Compton's plan. If agreement isn't reached, an EUB hearing to address concerns related to the ERP will commence on April 18, 2006.
Public safety is the EUB's first priority and this additional measure addresses the unique qualities of the proposed project, located 4.5 kilometres southeast of the closest residential community in Calgary.
The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's resources take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
