FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WELL CONTROL OPERATIONS CONTINUE AT CONOCO PHILLIPS BLOWOUT SOUTHEAST OF EDSON
Drayton Valley, Alberta (May 5, 2006) The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) continues to work with ConocoPhilips Canada and well control specialists to end an underground sour gas well blowout that occurred on Wednesday, May 3. The well, located 26 kilometres southeast of Edson, has a sour gas content of 0.4%.
On the evening of Thursday, May 4, the gas flow was ignited to eliminate sour gas (H2S) emissions. Ongoing air monitoring has shown no off-lease emissions at this time.
A flare tank was also set up overnight to enable well control specialists to begin temporarily producing this well to assist in well control operations.
No evacuations were necessary and the nearest resident is about 12 kilometres away. Roadblocks remain in place and other authorities are being kept informed as progress continues.
The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta ’s resources take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
