CONOCO PHILLIPS BLOWOUT NEAR EDSON SECURED
Drayton Valley, Alberta (May 6, 2006) Well control operations have been successful in securing an underground sour gas well blowout that occurred on May 3, 2006 approximately 26 kilometres southeast of Edson.
During the evening of May 5, well control specialists stopped the flow from the well by pumping water down hole. A service rig will now commence abandonment operations.
As is normal practice, an investigation into the cause of the blowout will commence immediately.
The blowout occurred at a sour gas well operated by ConocoPhillips Canada. The well, which has a sour gas content of 0.4 per cent and was ignited on May 4 to ensure emissions remained at negligible levels and the safety of on site personnel.
EUB staff remained on site for the duration of the incident and there was never any risk to public safety.
The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta’s resources take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
