EUB ISSUES DECISION ON REQUESTS FOR STANDING RESPECTING COMPTON PETROLEUM CORPORATION SWEET GAS WELL APPLICATION
Calgary, Alberta (June 8, 2006) The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) has issued Decision 2006-052 , regarding requests for standing (full participation at a hearing) respecting an application for a licence to drill a sweet natural gas well by Compton Petroleum Corporation approximately 38 kilometers (km) west of Claresholm.
The EUB has denied the requests for standing by the Livingstone Landowners Group, the Municipal District of Pincher Creek, the Pekisko Group, the Alberta Wilderness Association, the South Porcupine Hills Stewardship Association, and two families. The EUB found that the applicants did not demonstrate the potential for being directly and adversely impacted by the proposed well.
Having found that the owners of the land on which the proposed well would be located have given their approval, and that no other party had standing with respect to the subject application, the EUB completed its review of the application, including an environmental assessment, and notes that it conforms to all EUB requirements. Accordingly, the EUB will issue the requested well licence in due course.
The proposed well would be located within the boundaries identified within Informational Letter IL 93-9, Oil and Gas Development, Eastern Slopes (Southern Portion) . The EUB notes that the proposed well is an exploratory well. If Compton applied for any additional wells in the area, the EUB would require Compton to provide an area development plan and assessments as directed by IL 93-9, or demonstrate to the EUB’s satisfaction why a plan and assessments should not be required for additional wells.
The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta 's resources take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
