FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EUB TO INVESTIGATE INCIDENT AT SHELL SCOTFORD UPGRADER

Calgary, Alberta (September 7, 2006) At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 7, a sour gas (H2S) release occurred within the Shell Canada Ltd. Scotford Upgrader plant near Fort Saskatchewan. The gas ignited and was converted to sulphur dioxide (SO2).

As a precaution, the plant was evacuated and there were no injuries.

Mobile air monitoring in the area did not detect any H2S. No public evacuations were necessary,

The EUB will now examine the cause of the incident and the response to the incident by Shell Canada Ltd. 

The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's energy resources and utilities services take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
