FIRE EXTINGUISHED; EUB INVESTIGATION BEGINS INTO FIRE AT SWEET GAS WELL NEAR GLEICHEN
Calgary, Alberta (July 30, 2007) Field staff from the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) are investigating a fire that occurred at a sweet gas well near Gleichen yesterday.
At 3:35 p.m. on Sunday, July 29, a gas leak and fire occurred at a sweet gas well licensed to EOG Resources Canada Inc. four km northwest of Gleichen. One worker was injured and taken by ambulance to hospital in Gleichen before being transported to Calgary by air ambulance. Other workers received cuts and scrapes.
Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the lease site and extinguish the blaze at 2:15 a.m. this morning. The facility does not handle sour gas and there were no environmental impacts off the site. One family living near the site had been relocated to a hotel as a precautionary measure.
As is the normal practice, EUB staff will conduct an investigation into the incident.
The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's resources and utilities services take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
