EUB INITIATES REVIEW OF WEST ENERGY LTD. EGRESS ROAD

Calgary, Alberta (November 13, 2007) The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) will hold a public hearing on December 18, 2007 to examine whether a specific condition related to an egress road has been met.  This road relates to emergency response planning.

Specifically, the hearing will examine whether a proposed egress road route meets the requirements set out in EUB Decision 2007 – 061 that granted conditional approval for West Energy Ltd. to drill two critical sour oil wells near Rocky Rapids, Alberta.

On October 3 and 4, 2007, the Rocky Rapids Concerned Citizens wrote to the EUB expressing their concerns regarding this element of the EUB’s conditional approval.  On October 16, 2007, the EUB decided to initiate the hearing into the egress road.  On October 24, 2007, all parties who participated in the original hearing were notified about the upcoming hearing and were asked for their views on timing and process matters.  The hearing date was finalized following consultation with parties.

The decision to initiate the hearing follows EUB Decision 2007 – 061, which was issued on August 8, 2007.  In the Decision, the EUB placed ten conditions on the approvals relating to emergency response planning and public safety.

The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta’s energy resources and utility services take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
