ERCB INVESTIGATING ABANDONED SWEET OIL WELL LEAK ON CFB SUFFIELD

Calgary, Alberta (September 8, 2008) The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is investigating a leak at a abandoned sweet oil well at Canadian Forces Base Suffield (CFB) in southwestern Alberta.

The leak was discovered at about noon on September 8 at the well, licensed to Harvest Energy Trust. Approximately 60 to 90 barrels of liquids have leaked from the well. The leak has been stopped and clean up of the site has already begun. All appropriate authorities have been notified and ERCB staff are on site.

There were no injuries and no complaints from the public as a result of the incident. However, local wildlife have been affected by the leak.  As CFB Suffield is on federal land, Environment Canada is responding and reviewing impacts on wildlife.

As is the normal practice, ERCB staff will conduct an investigation into the incident.
