ERCB INVESTIGATING ATCO PIPELINE RUPTURE IN CALGARY

Calgary, Alberta (September 19, 2009) The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is investigating a rupture on a natural gas pipeline located on the east side of Calgary at the intersection of the #1 Highway (16 Ave. North) and 68 St.

As a result of the rupture, approximately 100 homes and a nearby shopping plaza were evacuated as a precautionary measure. In addition, both the #1 Highway and 68 St. were closed to traffic for several hours. The highway has subsequently been reopened.

The rupture occurred at about 9:00 AM due to road construction activities. There have been no injuries, environmental impacts, or disruptions to natural gas service as a result of the rupture.

The pipeline was shut in as soon as ATCO Pipelines personnel arrived at the site and work began to depressurize and stabilize the pipeline to prevent any further problems. All appropriate authorities were contacted, and an ERCB inspector was dispatched to the site.

As is normal practice, the ERCB will conduct an investigation into the incident.
