90-B: Field Measurement Program and GASCON2/Risk Approach

October 1990

The complete report is contained within 10 volumes plus 1 background paper. This scientific study represents one of the first of its kind in the world. Individual volumes outline the research project to gather field data of actual downwind concentrations of a harmless SF6 tracer gas for releases during generally calm conditions (low wind speed, stable and neutral meteorological conditions), gather comprehensive meteorological data for an extended period, evaluate the GASCON model with field data, and develop methods for estimating the consequences and risks associated with various uncontrolled sour gas releases.

The report is available for viewing at the ERCB Calgary Library as well as other libraries across Canada.

90-B VOL 1: Field measurement program atmospheric dispersion tracer study under stable conditions and meteorological study (500 pages)
Details the organization, approach, objectives, and methods used within the field study.

90-B VOL 2: Field measurement program Appendices to Volume 1 Appendix A (600 pages)
Contains statistics for each plume traverse and the corresponding meteorological conditions.

90-B VOL 3: Field measurement program Appendices to Volume 1 Appendix B through D (400 pages)
Contains statistics collected at stationary analysers.

90-B VOL 4: Field Measurement Program GASCON2 Evaluation (400 pages)
Contains the results of the Field Measurement Program as they were applied to the original GASCON model (1987 version) plus a comparison of the performance of the GASCON2, GASCON, and Simple Gaussian models.

90-B VOL 5: GASCON2: A Model to Estimate Ground Level H 2 S and SO 2 Concentrations from Uncontrolled Sour Gas Releases (300 pages) (Concord)
A technical document that outlines the theory, mathematical relationships, assumptions, and organization of the GASCON2 model.

90-B VOL 6: Risk Approach: An Approach for Estimating Risk to Public Safety from Uncontrolled Sour Gas Releases (150 pages)
Provides an approach for calculating individual and societal risk given the probability of lethality. Includes concept of frequency analysis using Fault Tree Analysis. Examples for certain well and pipeline cases, presented in GASCON2, are included.

90-B VOL 7: Risk Approach: ERCB Supplemental Appendices to Volumes 5 and 6 (150 pages)
Contains historic operation and failure statistics for sweet and sour pipelines and wells in Alberta. Includes new information on the toxicity of H 2 S based on the PROBIT method for describing the variability of the biological response.

90-B VOL 8: GASCON2 User Guide (30 pages) (ERCB and Concord)
Not available separately - only available with purchase of the GASCON2 model. Describes the requirements and input variables needed to run the GASCON2 computer model. The guide is designed for specialists familiar with the use of an IBM Personal Computer (or compatible) and the technical and atmospheric theory contained in Volume 5.

90-B VOL 9: Review of GASCON2 (Version 2.1) (Jan 1992)
Commentary of Scientific Advisory Board.

90-B VOL 10: Summary (150 pages) (ERCB and Concord)
Summarizes the ERCB Field Measurement Program and Concord Environmental Corporation GASCON2 and Risk Approach. Includes summaries for Volumes 1 through 8.
