EUB SETS SEPTEMBER 2003 DATE FOR POLARIS RESOURCES LTD. SOUR GAS WELL PUBLIC HEARING IN MAYCROFT
Calgary, Alberta (April 30, 2003) Following a pre-hearing meeting in Maycroft, Alberta on April 16, 2003, the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) has determined that a public hearing into applications by Polaris Resources Ltd. for a sour gas well will commence in the Maycroft Community Hall on September 9, 2003. EUB Decision 2003-030 arising out of the pre-hearing meeting has also been released today. This document more completely outlines the applications, issues and findings of the pre-hearing meeting and is available on the EUB web site at www.ercb.ca.
Polaris has applied for a licence to drill a vertical level-3 critical sour gas well from a surface location at 11-32-10-2-W5 (approximately 32 kilometres north of the Hamlet of Lundbreck), an associated special drilling spacing unit, and compulsory pooling.
Issues identified at the pre-hearing meeting included:
- Need for the Well, Compulsory Pooling, and Special Well Spacing Orders
- Location of the Proposed Well
- Environmental Impacts of the Proposed Well
- Health and Safety Impacts of the Proposed Well
- Land-Use Impacts of the Proposed Well
- Resource Recovery and Benefits of the Proposed Well
- Adequacy of Public Consultation Efforts for the Proposed Well, and
- Financial Security and Technical/Operational Ability of Polaris Resources Ltd.
The EUB will be issuing a formal notice of hearing in due course and will send a copy of the notice directly to each party who participated at the pre-hearing meeting. Notice will also be sent to those who provided written submissions to the applications to the EUB but did not attend the pre-hearing meeting, and all of the others identified in the applications as being potentially affected by the proposed development. Notice will also be published in local newspapers.
The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's resources take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
