EUB ISSUES COALBED METHANE ACTIVITY SUMMARY AD WELL LOCATIONS

Calgary, Alberta (June 24, 2005)  The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) has released Bulletin 2005-15 which includes a summary of coalbed methane (CBM) activity, well locations, gas production and associated water production in Alberta to December 31, 2004.

As of December 31, 2004, a total of 3575 CBM wells have been drilled in Alberta; of those, 1735 have CBM production. Over 90 per cent of producing CBM wells are located in the Horseshoe Canyon and Belly River coals which are generally dry. About 7 per cent of Alberta CBM wells are completed in Mannville coals that may produce significant volumes of saline water which must be disposed of according to regulatory requirements.

A complete list of wells completed in coals and test wells accompanies the Bulletin. As with all energy development in Alberta, the EUB will continue to closely track CBM development.

Coalbed methane development is strictly regulated in Alberta, as is all natural gas development. Regulations are currently in place to address the production, use and disposal of non-saline and saline water as well as well spacing, noise and emissions.

The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Albertas resources take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
