EUB WORKING WITH SHININGBANK ENERGY TO CONTROL SWEET GAS WELL BLOWOUT IN NORTHWESTERN ALBERTA
Calgary, Alberta (February 25, 2006) The Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) is working closely with Shiningbank Energy Ltd. and well-control specialists after a sweet gas well blew out in a remote area of northwestern Alberta.
The well, located at 14-01-113-05 W6, about 6 km northeast of the town of Chateh, on the Dene Tha reserve, and about 40 km northeast of Rainbow Lake, blew out early Friday morning after a drilling rig encountered a shallow pocket of sweet gas. There were no injuries.
Although roadblocks have been established to prevent access to the wellsite, there have been no public or environmental impacts, and none are expected to occur. However, due to the difficult weather conditions in the area, well-control efforts may take several days.
The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's resources and utilities services take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
