FIRE EXTINGUISHED; EUB INVESTIGATION BEGINS INTO EXPLOSION AT OILFIELD WASTE DISPOSAL FACILITY NEAR GRANDE CACHE

Calgary, Alberta (December 8, 2006) Field staff from the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) are investigating an explosion that occurred at an oilfield waste disposal facility yesterday near Grande Cache.

At approximately 3 p.m. on December 7, an explosion and subsequent fire occurred when a vacuum truck was unloading fluid into a tank at a Deepwell Energy Services facility located 27 km east of Grande Cache. The fire was put out at approximately 8:30 p.m. on December 7 by staff from Firemaster Oilfield Services Inc.

The facility does not handle waste from sour gas facilities, no evacuations of the public were necessary, and there were no environmental impacts. There are no residences within 5 km of the facility.

As is the normal practice, EUB staff will conduct an investigation into the incident.

The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's resources and utilities services take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
