FIRE AT SUNCOR OIL SANDS MINE EXTINGUISHED, EUB INVESTIGATING

Calgary, Alberta (October 2, 2007) Staff from the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) are investigating a fire that occurred at the Suncor Energy oil sands mine this morning. The mine site is located approximately 25 kilometres north of Fort McMurray.

As reported to the EUB, the fire started in a drum of the Millennium Coker Unit at 6:05 a.m. and was extinguished at 6:50 a.m. Due to damage caused by the fire, gas containing 15% hydrogen sulphide (H2S) was vented from the drum.

One Suncor employee was treated for minor injuries due to the fire. Also, as a result of the venting, non-essential staff from the base mine were evacuated. It is unclear at this time how the facility’s production will be affected by the fire.

Suncor informed the EUB about the fire immediately. As is standard practice, EUB staff are investigating the incident.

The EUB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's energy resources and utility services take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
