ERCB RESCINDS PRODUCTION CONSTRAINTS ON FIREBAG PROJECT
Calgary, Alberta (July 22, 2008) The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) has removed the productions constraints within its high-risk enforcement action on Suncor Energy Inc.’s Firebag thermal in situ bitumen project in the Athabasca Oil Sands Area, effective immediately.
The constraints were lifted after Suncor made a number of improvements at the site that addressed the issues that prompted the ERCB to issue the enforcement action.
The restrictions have been in place since September 24, 2007, after the ERCB determined that historical and current venting, flaring, and H2S emissions at the Firebag facility did not comply with ERCB requirements. One of the conditions of the ERCB’s subsequent enforcement action stated that Firebag must remain at or below May 2007 production levels until Suncor had addressed the issues at the site.
The high-risk enforcement action remains in place until Suncor meets all conditions originally set forth in September 2007. The ERCB will continue to closely monitor the site to ensure that emissions comply with ERCB requirements, and that all other conditions are met.
The ERCB ensures that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta’s energy resources take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest.
