ERCB MONITORING CLEANUP AT SITE OF ENCANA BLOWOUT
Calgary, Alberta (April 14, 2009) The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is monitoring cleanup efforts by EnCana after an oil well blowout released fluids into nearby muskeg approximately 56 km northeast of Wabasca, Alberta. Initial estimates place the volume of fluids at approximately 20,000 barrels, the vast majority of which is saline water and polymers, with trace amounts of oil.
The blowout occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on Friday, April 10 and was capped on Sunday, April 12 at approximately 10:30 a.m.
There was no fire, and no danger to public safety. No gas was vented. No water has entered any creeks or rivers. All appropriate authorities have been notified.
ERCB inspectors are on site and have begun an investigation into the incident.
