Take Notice that Grande Cache Coal Company (GCC) has applied to the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board (EUB) and Alberta Environment (AENV) for approval to construct and operate a coal mine and coal processing facility north of Grande Cache. The proposed mine development is located 20 km north of Grande Cache in the Municipal District of Greenview, within Townships 57 - 58, Ranges 8 - 9, West of the 6th Meridian. The proposed development includes the No.8 surface open pit mine, No.7 underground coal mine, haul roads, Flood Creek disposal facility, coal processing plant, associated infrastructure, water and tailings management plans and an integrated closure plan. The Grande Cache Coal Project is designed to recover 1.7 million tonnes per year of primarily bituminous metallurgical coal over a 9.5-year period.
This Notice of Filing is being distributed to advise interested persons that the applications are available, and that the EUB, AENV and other government departments are now undertaking reviews of the applications.
Further Take Notice that pursuant to Section 70 of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) and Section 109 of the Water Act (WA), any person who is directly affected by EPEA Application No. 001-155804 or the WA Application No. 00143283, may submit a written statement of concern outlining the reasons for objecting, by February 1, 2002. Failure to file a statement of concern on or before February 1, 2002 may affect the right to file a Notice of Appeal (on appeal with the Environmental Appeal Board).
Nature of Applications
In support of their proposal, GCC has prepared and submitted the following applications:
Application No. 001-155804 to AENV, pursuant to Section 42 of EPEA, to construct and operate a new underground mine, surface mine, and coal processing facility.
- An application (File No. 001-155804) to AENV to operate a waste water system as part of the mining operation.
- An application (File No. 001-155804) to AENV to operate a potable water system as part of the mining operation
