Petroleum Uses
Crude oil and natural gas have thousands of everyday uses. Petroleum products are used as fuel for vehicles, electrical generation, and by-products to make literally thousands of consumer items.
Nearly three-quarters of the oil produced in Canada is refined into transportation fuels such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and fuel oil for ships. Other uses include domestic and industrial heating and electrical generation.
Natural gas has a variety of uses, the most common being for home heating, hot water tanks, and a variety of household appliances.
Schools, office buildings, hotels, restaurants, and many other business use natural gas for heating and cooling, while large businesses are also beginning to use natural gas for on-site electricity generation as an economical alternative to purchasing power from the grid.
The industrial sector consumes around 60 per cent of Alberta gas for petroleum refining, feedstock for the petrochemical sector, plastics, food processing, and the glass and paper industries.
