Invitation for Feedback on Draft Revised Edition of Directive 062: Coalbed Methane Control Well Requirements and Related Matters

The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) invites stakeholders to provide feedback on the draft revised edition of Directive 062: Coalbed Methane Control Well Requirements and Related Matters. The draft directive is available on the ERCB Web site www.ercb.ca under Industry Zone : Rules, Regulations, and Requirements : Directives.

Review of the April 2008 edition of Directive 062 by the ERCB has resulted in the draft revised edition of Directive 062, which includes the following:

• additional detail for application requirements relating to deferrals, exceptions, and rescissions of control wells,
• inclusion of the Taber and MacKay coal zones located in Development Entity No. 1 for exploration deferrals,
• the establishment of a 30-day flow period for coalbed methane wells before control wells are required, and
• details on horizontal control wells and horizontal coalbed methane production wells.

The revisions are consistent with the ERCB’s direction of continuing to move toward a new regulatory framework for unconventional gas.

The ERCB is seeking stakeholder feedback on the draft revised directive by September 30, 2009. Any feedback or questions may be directed to controlwells@ercb.ca.
