Changes to the Field Surveillance Inspection System (FIS)

The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) implemented the Field Surveillance Inspection System (FIS) on August 26, 2002, for the electronic submission of upstream oil and gas activity notifications. Implementing a system of this scope involved many challenges, and the ERCB thanks the oil and gas industry in Alberta for their patience and support over the last eight years.

FIS was originally programmed using Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6 (VB6) programming language, but support for programs written in VB6 is being discontinued. To accommodate this change, FIS is being converted into Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET). With this comes the opportunity to add various enhancements and increase the functionality of the current FIS user interface.

This bulletin brings attention to the major changes being made that will affect the current look and feel of the FIS user interface, which is accessed via the Digital Data Submission (DDS) system.

These changes will be applied to the FIS and DDS systems, rendering them unavailable. There will be a service disruption starting 7:00 a.m., Saturday, January 30, 2010, and lasting until 5:30 p.m., Saturday, January 30, 2010. During this time the DDS system will be unavailable. All mandatory notifications that must be submitted during this period should be entered before 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 30, 2010.

The attached pages give detailed information to help users become familiar with the changes and enhancements to the DDS menu structure and the updated FIS interface.
