Amendment to the Oil and Gas Conservation Regulations Regarding the Release of Dipmeter Surveys

The Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) is amending the Oil and Gas Conservation Regulations (OGCR) to remove reference to “dipmeter survey” in Section 12.150(4). Section 12.150(4) lists types of information and data that must be released after one year from the finished drilling date of a well. The inclusion of “dipmeter survey” in this section but not in preceding sections has resulted in dipmeter surveys not being released until one year from the finished drilling date.

On June 29, 2010, the ERCB published Bulletin 2010-21: Proposed Amendment to the Oil and Gas Conservation Regulations Regarding Confidentiality of Dipmeter Surveys proposing this change and soliciting feedback by July 31, 2010. All comments and concerns have been satisfactorily addressed.

The amendment to the OGCR is effective October 1, 2010, on a go-forward basis. Dipmeter surveys received by the ERCB prior to October 1, 2010, will continue to be released one year from the finished drilling date regardless of the well’s confidentiality. Dipmeter surveys received on or after October 1, 2010, will be released at the same time as other logs on the basis of the well’s confidentiality.

Questions regarding the ERCB’s administration of dipmeter surveys can be directed by e-mail to WellLogInquiries@ercb.ca or by telephone to Abby Cook, Resource Information Section, at 403-297-2581.
