Public Safety: Working for Albertans
The ERCB is responsible for regulating the development of Alberta's energy resources. This means ensuring that the discovery, development, and delivery of Alberta's energy resources and utilities take place in a manner that is fair, responsible, and in the public interest. Regulation is needed so that nonrenewable resources are produced efficiently and in an environmentally acceptable way that does not compromise social values or public health and safety.
The ERCB has comprehensive regulations and requirements that are designed to maximize safety during the exploration for, and production of, oil and gas resources. A project application will be approved only if all relevant regulations are met or exceeded. If a decision is made to proceed with a project, the ERCB monitors the safe development and operation throughout the life of a project through inspection, audit, and enforcement activities.
Regulation serves not only to ensure efficient development to maximize resource recovery in the interests of all Albertans, but also to ensure a safe and reliable infrastructure of energy facilities.
